In the quarter-century since Theresa Russell and Brenda Parhiala struck out on their own, styles have come and gone. But one thing has remained constant: their determination and imagination.

“Hard work, perseverance, staying the course and keeping up with current trends and design,” Theresa says of what has made Dusk to Dawn Interiors such a success.

“This business is of our making so we get to bend and change with what we feel is the pulse of the current trends,” Brenda says. “Because we are entrepreneurs we are not confined to stay within any boxes of another’s construct.”

Both are graduates of Confederation College and worked together at the decorating company, Otto & Bayne. In 1993, they launched a bed and bath decor store.

“There was an unfulfilled niche in the market,” Brenda says. “We decided it was a great time to venture out on our own and create a business that could be flexible, to change with the times and trends.”

At Dusk to Dawn Interiors, Theresa and Brenda wear many hats. As partner/designer/decorator, they offer personalized professional service.

“We attend design and trade shows to keep abreast of current trends in home furnishings and designs to bring the newest and best to Thunder Bay,” Theresa says of their line-up of furniture, cabinets and closets.

Along with the principals, Dusk to Dawn has two other employees and can call on independent contractors.

Naturally, happy and satisfied clients are what continues to motivate them.

“To see and hear how pleased people are with their homes makes it worthwhile,” Theresa says. “I love to bring joy to people through art and design. Our homes are a very important part of our lives and we take great pride and responsibility in doing our best so they can have the home they dream of.”

Despite the normal ups and downs of any endeavour, it’s been a long and fruitful partnership.

“I still can’t believe that 26 years has passed since we decided to start our little store,” Theresa says. “So much has happened in our lives since then, and we continue to put our passion into our business.”

Adds Brenda, “Who would have thought this little engine that could would still be here and serving Thunder Bay for 25 years!”
