After more than 30 years at its iconic location on Simpson Street, Irma’s Bridal Boutique has moved across town to Algoma Street. Even though Irma Ricci has scaled back her involvement in the business, she continues to be a big part of the operation as her daughter and son-in-law take on larger roles.

“I currently go in twice a week to do fittings,” says Irma, of the new location next to Vaillant Florist. “Along with all the previous bridal and evening wear found at the Simpson Street location, Josy and Jim Vaillant have also started carrying unique casual/business line.”

Irma’s reputation was built on exceptional service, and stocking exquisite bridal, ladies wear and accessories. As a full-service bridal shop, it carried wedding gowns, evening dresses, bridesmaids apparel, baptismal accessories and shoes — essentially “everything a bride and bridal party would need for their special day.”

Along with Irma herself, the new location also features a familiar face in Cristina Bakker, who’s been with her for 28 years.

The new location next to Vaillant Florist makes the transition easier for Irma and her daughter.

“We have streamlined both businesses,” daughter Josy says. “I have taken over the office and buying, slowly taking over the entire company.”

The front of the original flower shop has been converted for Irma’s Boutique. Vaillant Florist remains in the original design/delivery space. Vaillant Florist has been a full-service flower shop for 36 years.

“Fashions and flowers under one roof!” Josy proclaims.

She and husband Jim have been working together for 25 years. They’ve been married for 35 years.

As for Irma, now 77, she will be able to devote more time to gardening, knitting, baking bread and preparing her famous Sunday dinners for her large family.

Even though her profile is diminishing, her influence remains strong.

“Her brides from 30 years ago are now bringing in their daughters to purchase wedding gowns,” Josy says. “That’s a true testament to her craft.”
