The Little Mermaid
Doris Jorgensen
As the years go by, the milestones keep coming for Doris Jorgensen. Among all the changes she has experienced, one thing remains constant: the doors to her iconic women’s clothing shop remain open.
“I’ve always loved beautiful clothes,” she says.
Even as a young child, Doris had flair for fashion. Doris says she loves to work and enjoys making her customers happy.
The shop stocks women’s formal and casual wear such as tops, pants, coats and dresses from designers such as Frank Lyman, Marble sweaters and By Lyse sportswear, as well as accessories such as Zsiska jewellery.
“My customers tell me that I’m the only store that still caters to all age groups,” she says.
Doris and her staff are very excited about the Frank Lyman fashions that range from casual to formal wear. Frank Lyman Fashions can be found worldwide and the Little Mermaid carries a full line of these beautiful clothes.
Doris recalls a long-time customer who came in a few years ago looking for a pant suit. She was going to celebrate her 100th birthday by throwing the ceremonial first pitch at a Border Cats game. The lady and her outfit were featured on the front page of The Chronicle-Journal.
“That shows the kind of customers I have,” Doris says. “The age group I serve are between Grade 8 and 100.”
Born in Denmark in 1938, Doris grew up a happy child despite the Nazi occupation. When she and husband Sven married in 1958, they eventually made their way to Nolalu and Fort William. After raising four children, Doris fulfilled her dream of owning a women’s boutique. With her husband retired and able to help, Doris operates her shop with the assistance of three long-time staff members.
Doris continues to offer beautiful fashions to the women of Thunder Bay and surrounding areas.
