A passion for antiques and collectibles led Marjorie Knutson to acquire one of Thunder Bay’s historic buildings, then use her interest in interior design to make it into a unique shopping experience.

Knutson established Victoria’s Cupboard in 1990 in a shared a storefront. As demand for her merchandise grew she looked for something bigger and in 2001 moved to the former Times Journal building on May Street.

She comes to the business with a varied educational background and a stint as a grade school teacher. Her success stems from her upbringing.

“My parents were both Ukrainian and instilled in me high moral values and a strong work ethic,” says Knutson. Success is further rooted in a supportive family and a sense of humour.

Today, Victoria’s Cupboard offers a wide variety of merchandise unique to Thunder Bay such as Patience Brewster, Dept 56, Trisha Romance limited-edition prints, and Crabtree and Evelyn bath and body products.

“We pride ourselves in being able to offer special request orders for customers,” says Knutson.

The store does not appear to be large, but inside is 5,000 square feet of display space in a variety of rooms, each offering its own flair.

Knutson’s staff of four increases to a dozen when she opens for Christmas on the second floor after Thanksgiving. “Our holiday season provides customers with hot apple cider, dips and home baking,” she says. “This extra special touch sets us apart from other retailers.”
